Picking 8th
Ok...here's one for you all. I was just informed I got the 8th pick in a 12 team non ppr league. QB's get 6pts per TD and 1pt for every 50yards. RB's get 6 per TD and 1pt for every 20yards. I'm almost 100% sure that Brady and Manning will be gone before the 8th pick, as will be the top tier RB's. Should I take the next best RB, which will probable be Gore, Barber, or Portis...or grab Romo. I've never picked a QB in the first round, but I think this is a wierd year. I'm thinking if I grab a RB with my 1st pick, Romo will be gone and and I'll be entering the 2nd tier QB's. If I grab Romo first then I'm looking at a Lynch or Graham or Lewis, all of whom may be very good.
I'm also thinking of this...as I did last year and it got me to the championship game...My first 5 picks would be as follows: QB, RB, WR, TE, D. This way I'm sure to have a stud in at least those 5 positions. My league is funny. I know if QB's start going in the !st round everyone will follow suit, and nobody normally pickes a TE or D before the 4th or 5th round, so I'd be looking at the top one or two TE's and the top one or two D's.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with drafting like this?

Since TDs are more important than yards in this league, I think you'll be lucky if Barber is there at #8 and if he is, you have to take him. He's been second in the league in TDs for RBs the last two years and with 1 point every 20 yards, the RBs who score the most TDs should do the best. I wouldn't take a QB in the first round unless it's Brady.
Big Ben had 32 TDs last year and with 1pt every 50 yards, he should rank right up there among the elite QBs. Same with Derek Anderson. Palmer should do better than he did last year and return to his 30 TD ways. If there seems to be a run on QBs, I'd take one of these guys in round two, but if it's looking safe, I'd actually roll the dice (using your strategy) and take an elite WR like Owens, Wayne, A.Johnson, etc. One of the above mentioned guys should be there in round 3. If you'd rather not take that chance, grab a QB and be safe. If somehow you were able to land Brees in round two, I'd pull the trigger before they finished telling you it was your turn.
Thanks Dooms for the analysis. I've been wanting to target Barber. If he is there at 8th I"ll probably take him, then grab a QB with my 2nd pick. I also have been wanting Romo, and felt for sure I'd get him at 8th, but im worried I'd lacking at RB if I did. I could definately live with Roethlisberger, Palmer or Brees. I'm still not 100% sold on Anderson...with Quinn waiting in the wings.
Do you like the first 5 going RB, QB, WR, TE, D...or do you think thats risky? I know my 2nd RB will be a mess, but there are a few sleepers out there that may be around (Stewart, Mendenhall, Forte,) that I'm thinking could sneak down to the 6th round. I still think Alexander is going to land somewhere too. WR's, I'm not so worries about, cause after the top 10 or so its a total crap shoot anyway.
I have to agree with Doomsday on this one.
Round 1 -- Too early to take Romo IMO. I would go RB. If the league was PPR & Yardage based, I would go with Gore. Since I'm assuming it's non-PPR AND there is much more emphasis on TDs vs. Yards, Barber is a great selection here. Under these league rules, he is the clear #6 RB available (assuming S Jax plays this year). I would take Marion Barber III with this pick.
Round 2 -- IF Romo or Brees is available, take them. If not, I would go with the best WR on the board -- which would be Doomsday's list above & I would add Braylon Edwards as well. One of those guys would be here for certain...I would get the stud WR because there may not be a Top Tier WR available when you pick later on.
Round 3 -- If you took Brees/Romo in Round 2, I'd get the best WR available like TJ Housh/Holt/Burress/S Smith. If you took a WR, I would get the best QB available out of Tier 2 -- Big Ben, Palmer, Derek Anderson, etc.
Then you could go TE/WR, RB, and D in your next 3 picks in some order if you wish...depending on who's out there. I think you'll have to see how the draft is shaking out before making a call here. Be flexible & take the best value available regardless of position. If Witten/Winslow is available in Round 4, I might have to grab him.
Good luck & good question!!
jets is right on the money with B.Edwards as a top WR. I'd even rank him dead even with TO and AJ considering he pulled in 16 TDs last year.
As for your question on do I like the strategy...hey, how can I say no if it won you a championship? Go with what works in your particular league. Personally, I'd lean more towards taking a RB before a TE because that's actually a deep position this year and I think you'll see guys like Heath Miller and Scheffler rise up the ranks. You can also get guys like Cooley and Shockey a little later and they'll still perform well for you. There's also some late round guys that may do very well this year including Crumpler (who's finally healthy again and the top target in his offense), Randy McMichael )who Al Saunders will attempt to make his 10th TE pro bowler in a row) and Zach Miller may surprise since Russell leaned on him so heavy last year. Well, now that I think about it, maybe not so much Miller in this format...
Thanks jets...Im leaning towards Barber in the first and see how things look in the 2nd. I'm worried about Gore's health. I think Martz is going to use him alot and that makes me nervous...to much opportunity to get hurt for him. I appreciate your views as well!
Dooms, that stragety of mine only got me to the championship game...which I lost by 4pts. It should be noted that I started Jennings, not taking into account the weather at Lambeau...Brandon Marshall, on my bench went off and had 20 or 21 points. I beat myself!! So I have a bitter taste in my mouth and want to start off right this year! Thanks you your help.
For me, I like to go with a draft strategy for the first 3 rounds with 2 possible scenarios (RB-QB-WR or RB-WR-QB for example). After that, I like to just see how the draft goes & who's available. If the remaining starting RBs are in short supply by Round 4, you might want to go that route & save TE for later. If you feel confident you can get a Julius Jones/Rudi Johnson/etc. later, you might want to grab a Witten or Winslow in Round 4. A lot of it depends on who is taken up to that point.
I definitely love Barber with the 8th. pick in this draft. If you assume Brady, Manning, and "The Big 5 RBs" go in the first 7 picks, then MB III is clearly the next best guy to get in this format...and good value at #8.
Good luck!
Nice post on Edwards Jetman.. Can Donte Stallworth be worthy of a draft spot on a guys roster??
Yes. He can be a decent low #3 or high #4 WR to have on your team -- a nice late-round selection. It's hard to see him having a big year since the Browns have Edwards & Winslow, but he could catch his share of balls in a pass-oriented offense. Plus, if Edwards/Winslow gets hurt, his production can go up dramatically.
